I used to be an avid reader. I love love loved reading and had piles of books all over the house. And then with kids, my business, and life in general, that somehow got away from me.
So this year, as part of my One Little Word journey, I'm getting my nose back into a book. And to keep myself accountable, I'm going to share with you what I'm reading each month. This month it's a two for one, with what I read during January and then what's on my bedside to read this month.
I generally pick books for their cover, but for January I had two books that were linked to my word for the year, Heart, and that were already on top of my list. I saw the movie Wild with Reese Witherspoon when it came out and couldn't wait to read the book. In it Cheryl Strayed writes 'keep faith with the step. One step at a time. That's how we move forward'. This really resonated with me, that sometimes all we can do is take that next step and inch forward. It was funny and personal and inspiring. I loved it.
The other book I read in January was Brene Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection. It had been recommended to me, and then this quote right there on the front cover sealed the deal - 'Let go of who you think you are supposed to be and embrace who you are'. The book deals with being vulnerable, belonging rather than fitting in, and offers guide posts for wholehearted living, which is something I've been thinking a lot about lately. I think this is a book I'll revisit again later in the year, one reading is definitely not enough!
And so for February I decided to look for books that fed both mind and soul. Last week I visited my local book store, something I haven't done in a long long time. Just walking the aisles was amazing, and even once I'd picked my two for the month I continued to wander and leaf through other options.I may not do this every month, as I'd also like to find my library card and borrow, it is a beautiful thing to purchase a book!
When I saw Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty it jumped out off the shelf at me - I've heard so much about it via the series that I just had to have it. Similarly, Life Lessons from Remarkable Women was one of the first books I touched when I entered the store, and given I love women's stories, this one was a had to have as well. I've started Life Lessons today, and I'm already hooked.
Reading is one of those heart things that really make me feel I'm doing some of that self care we often talk about. I'm head over heels already, and look forward to that quiet moment each day to read a couple of pages. If you're reading something great at the moment, I'd love to hear about it - I'm always up for suggestions!
